The Most Common Mistakes in Choosing Liturgical Vestments

The most common mistakes in choosing liturgical vestments concern not only aesthetics, but also compliance with the liturgical season, quality of craftsmanship, and practicality. A well-chosen liturgical vestment should be able to be used for many years, emphasize the dignity of the celebrated liturgy, and meet the requirements of Church tradition.

In our workshop, we design and craft liturgical vestments for parishes, religious orders, and religious communities in Poland and throughout Europe. Drawing on our many years of experience, we have observed that many purchasing decisions are made solely based on a photo or the product’s price. However, choosing an appropriate chasuble or stole requires taking several important factors into account. In this article, we address the most common mistakes made when selecting liturgical vestments and offer advice on how to effectively avoid them.

Choosing liturgical vestments without considering liturgical colors

One of the most common mistakes is buying a vestment without considering its intended use during the liturgical year.

Why does color matter?

Each liturgical color has specific symbolism and usage:

  • white and ecru – Solemnities of the Lord and feasts of non-martyr saints,
  • green – Ordinary Time,
  • red – Solemnities of the Martyrs and Pentecost,
  • purple – Advent and Lent,
  • black – liturgies of mourning.

The absence of appropriate colors can limit the ability to fully adapt the celebration to liturgical requirements.

Liturgical Colors – Meaning and Use

For parishes just beginning to assemble their liturgical furnishings, the best approach is often to start with the basic colors:

Green Gothic chasubles

Purple Gothic chasubles

Ecru Gothic chasubles

Basing your choice solely on the price of liturgical vestments

A second common mistake is choosing the cheapest option available.

A low price often involves compromises

Cheaper products may be made from less durable materials, feature lower-quality embroidery, or have less careful finishing. In practice, this results in faster wear and tear and the need to replace them sooner.

A well-made chasuble is an investment for many years. High-quality fabrics retain their aesthetic appeal despite frequent use, and professional embroidery remains legible and elegant even after many years.

At Urbanowicz Haft Polska, we prioritize the durability of materials and precision in manufacturing, which allows us to supply our products to parishes throughout Europe.

It is useful to analyze the total cost of ownership

A cheaper chasuble, replaced every few years, may ultimately cost more than a high-quality product used for fifteen or several decades.

Neglecting the quality of the embroidery and liturgical symbolism

Many buyers focus exclusively on color and cut, neglecting the meaning of the ornaments.

Liturgical embroidery has a symbolic dimension

Decorative elements do not serve merely an aesthetic function. Motifs such as:

  • the cross,
  • the Lamb of God,
  • the monogram of Christ,
  • Marian symbols,
  • the vine and ears of grain,

are intended to convey a specific theological message.
